As Always, refer to the image at the end of this article.
When playing through a World Versus World match, objectives will be won and lost, but the tides will turn when key objectives are regained and the battle is pushed away from a world’s objectives. There are a couple ways to push away another world and rally. Probably the easiest method to use is the line in the sand system. The zerg leaders will choose a place to make a stand and try to kill as many enemies as quickly as possible to help lower enemy morale. This is usually done near a friendly primary objective to aid in “resurrection” speed. A second, more difficult, but more chaotic method is to send small groups of players around the edge of the zone to cause havoc among enemy supply lines.
The first method requires strong team play, and careful combinations of classes as to provide the maximum amount of usable defensive skills, along with a massive amount of high damage and shutdown skills to hold the battle.
It is possible that Castle Bailey (1) has been captured by the East World. The East World could then launch attacks on the West Keep Vale objective systems (2&3), or, if as yet undisclosed world conditions are met, may push through into West’s home zone. When this happens it can be disheartening to many, but a rally is still very possible. First, the zerg leader must give a place to make a legitimate stand, complete with siege engines and a lot of players. This must be done with sheer force of numbers. While the enemy world may not immediately turn back, once the massive numbers of players begin to overwhelm the advancing enemies, many players will begin a retreat, or at least move back to Castle Bailey (1) to wait for resurrections and reinforcements. One issue with this method is that while the enemy may attempt to attack West Vale Keep (6) directly, there is no way to know for certain that they will. They may attempt to secure the secondary objectives (2&3) around West Vale Keep and instead start a siege on West Vale Keep to deprive it of resources. This will create serious issues for zerg leaders. First, it is very difficult to coordinate a stand when possibly 10 objectives are all being raided simultaneously. The second issue is that even if the secondary objectives are able to be recovered, a massive resource loss has still been incurred and it will take time to regain said resources.
The only way to counteract this type of mass war is to practice guerrilla warfare. When a Lumber Mill or Mine is captured, NPCs come to haul the supplies to the Mill Tower or Mine Tower. Small groups of stealth players, primarily thiefs, rangers, and mesmers, will travel around secondary objectives disrupting supply lines both to Castle Bailey (1) and to East Keep Vale (7). It will take longer, and must be done in conjunction with a defensive method at West Keep Vale (6), or else the West World will lose its foothold and East will be able to push into West’s home zone.
The guerilla tactics will then have to take on a more aggressive approach. Once East notices their supplies dwindling (via a counter, note * on map), they will back off and attempt to regain the lost supplies. With the threat to West (2,3,6) alleviated, players from West would have to push around the sides of the map as best as possible and begin capturing East’s secondary objectives (4,5). While East will still have a significant advantage by controlling Castle Bailey (1), with their supplies cut off, they will be unable to continue the siege for some time.
The guerilla tactic is not perfect, but neither is the force of numbers method. Both present unique challenges to combat the enemy, but when outnumbered or outmatched, a more subtle, or more chaotic method must be employed to mess up the enemy world(s) supply lines. When numbers are a non-issue, however, either method may be employed to rally West and plant the seed to siege Castle Bailey.
This article was written using all available knowledge on World Versus World as well as speculation on what may be in the game based on Dark Age of Camelot’s Realm Versus Realm combat.
A a shout out to ChonsyRulez for giving me the idea to mark the locations with numbers.
